Rave On Air

Rave On Air is the UK’s largest student broadcasting event that Ravensbourne puts on each year to showcase student skills. Although the event is largely broadcast focused, it is a chance to demonstrate any work that people may have.

In 2008 I produced an interactive installation called ShoutBox which is a creative and reactive space. Simply shout, watch and listen.

The concept evolved from the theme of ‘community’ and bringing people together. When you make a noise, that noise is depicted on the screen. The louder the noise, the bigger the shape and the longer you hold the not for then faster the shape moves around the screen.

This was a great experience as I was the project leader which gave me working practice with managing people as well as watching the general public use something I had created. All of this has taught me some valuable lessons and skills, as well as made me aware of aspects of designing that I was previously unaware of.

Also this year I designed the Rave On Air website working with various levels of the management team. The design changed considerably and there were several distinct designs.

In 2007 I worked with Daniel O’Connell and Robert Andre to produce two interactive TV applications.

One application was for the news channel and designed to be overlaid on top of the stream to provide up to date news stories in a non-linear environment. It took a week or so to complete the application and I learned a great deal about the iTV platform.

The second application was an interactive children’s quiz designed to work in conjunction with a website and a TV programme. This involved creating a scoring system and counting correct answers.

Here are some images of the finished applications.
