Dissertation Preparation

Is internet privacy succumbing to internet security?

This is the best way I have been able to phrase the content of my proposed dissertation so far. I haven’t thought of anything better but then I guess that’s the whole point of the ‘preparation’ aspect. I think a thesaurus may be needed.

The general content of my dissertation will be on the paradox that is the security and privacy issues surrounding the internet. Originally I was going to focus specifically on file sharing and the problems that it is causing. Such as ISPs being forced to take responsibility for what their customers are downloading. I wrote an essay on this subject as part of a contextual studies unit which can be found here.

While writing that essay I realised that what I was talking about had wider reaching implications and so the thought process for my dissertation began.

People to contact:

Phorm - internet advertising agency who have been in the media recently about violating internet privacy laws even though they tried to make their targeted ad system anonymous. Their video indicated to me that it was anonymous so I would be interested as to what they have violated.

ISPs - internet service providers such as BT, Virgin, Tiscali, Pipex etc. would be a great source of information with regard to the pressures they faced recently with the government’s proposed ‘three strike ban’. Luckily this was voted out, but only narrowly.

Government - contacting any area of the government that deals with this area would be very beneficial to my argument as I want to get both sides of it to ensure a balance and having a direct quote from a government official would be a fantastic example.

So there you have it so far… thats pretty much my synopsis done :D

Other words and phrases that could be included in the question:

Succumbing, Surrendering, Encroaching, Blurring the line, Demise of, Cracking
Security, Protection, Safety, Safeguard
Privacy, Anonymity
