Long Live Open-Source

An article reports that today Firefox announced that it had reached a milestone of 500 million downloads of the open-source browser. I think that’s great. I love the whole open-source ethos but I am in a quandary, can you make any money from open-source software? Not that I’m a money hungry tycoon, but Microsoft are about to release IE8 beta and undoubtedly they will have copied the very useful features from Firefox. Tabbed browsing for example? A separate search box with customisable engines? Good ideas, but I can’t help but feel Firefox are getting ripped off.

Firefox may end up getting ripped off, but that’s generally the way technology works with this kind of thing. Especially with Microsoft, they’ve made millions off of other peoples ideas. The biggest thing is that IE8 still won’t be complying to web standards, and are in fact using incredibly round about ways to fix problems that they themselves have created, and then pinning the blame on the web designers and making it look like they are doing US a favour. Anyway, here’s a couple of links you may want to look at in regards to the development of IE8:

At the end of the day Firefox (and more lately Safari) have both started to make big names for themselves, and their rapid growth has seriously started to threaten IE. Perhaps one of the reasons that IE is no longer supported on the Mac.

Just noticed Dell are selling pc’s with Ubuntu on now. Good news for open source. I want to give it a go, but would prefer to test it out on an old desktop or whatnot.

And long live Firefox!
